CPA Australia has a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with CAI.
Pathway to CPA membership
The following steps demonstrate the pathway for members of CAI to become members of CPA Australia.
Step 1: Determine your eligibility
You may be eligible to apply for CPA Australia membership if you:
- are a current member of good standing with CAI and not under any investigation for professional conduct infringements
- have successfully completed the Chartered Accountants Program or Qualification Program, including the respective work experience requirements
- hold a university degree recognised by CPA Australia as being at least comparable to Australian Bachelor degree level. This will be determined during the verification of your application
- have successfully completed five (5) years of post-qualification relevant work experience evidenced by a curriculum vitae, if requested.
- did not gain entry to membership with CAI through any mutual recognition agreement.
Step 2: Apply
Complete our online application and submit with the required documentation, including your application and membership fee.
In your application nominate CAI as the professional body with whom you studied and hold membership.
Step 3: Verification and outcome of your application
We will verify the information in your application and send you an email advising you of your assessment outcome.

Step 4: Maintain your membership
A member of CAI who gains membership of CPA Australia under the terms of this MRA must retain their membership with the original membership body.
