Join us for three live streams crafted to inform and upskill our members on the critical and evolving landscape of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) matters. Designed for the accounting profession, this series equips attendees with the knowledge to integrate ESG concepts and principles into their professional practice, ensuring relevance and leadership in a dynamically evolving world.

Live stream 1: Systems thinking for a more sustainable world

Business leaders and accountants are increasingly faced with risks that are interconnected and extremely complex. In a world that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous the need for holistic solutions has never been more pressing. Sustainability-related topics interrelate, for example, the impact of physical risks of climate change on nature and biodiversity. Sustainability risks and opportunities should also be viewed with other business risks and opportunities in a balanced manner that seeks to unlock synergies. In this live stream, we will explore the role of systems thinking in driving sustainable business transformations and moreover safeguarding business resilience.

Live stream 2: Systems thinking – Connecting climate, nature and social impact

As climate-related reporting is gaining traction with the adoption of IFRS S1 and S2 across multiple jurisdictions, the interconnectivity of climate with nature and social impact is becoming ever more pressing. In this live stream, we will explore the importance of holistic thinking to ensure that climate solutions and the accompanying business transformations include consideration of nature and social impact. We will explore how climate change impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems and how there is growing evidence of a disproportionate impact on First Nations people. We will also look at the role of accountants, through finance business partnering, to provide leadership and evidence-based solutions to guide businesses in crafting appropriate value propositions and strategies that stretch beyond climate.

Live stream 3: Climate reporting – Evidence from the front lines

Australia’s first year of reporting under AASB S2 has posed challenges and opportunities for the public and private sectors. In this live stream, we will delve into the outputs of the first year of reporting. A cross-industry analysis will include consideration of: Emerging points of concern, Industry comparability, and How ambition is being measure and reported on. This live stream will focus across management accounting, external reporting and assurance and will aim to provide a comprehensive snapshot of how businesses are: Adapting their strategies and business models, Leveraging from existing performance measurement, Articulating these actions in their climate reporting, and Navigating assurance.

Presenter bio

Patrick Viljoen

Patrick is the Sustainability Leader, working in the Policy and Advocacy team at CPA Australia.

Patrick represents member interests on a range of forums including the ASX Corporate Governance Council, the Accounting for Sustainability (A4S) Accounting Bodies Network and Australian Public Policy Committee.

Prior to joining CPA Australia, Patrick worked for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) in London and Shanghai as Regional Finance Manager Africa / Asia.

Patrick also lectured in Finance and Investment Management, and prior to that held several key finance positions in the wealth creation industry in both the United Kingdom and South Africa.
