KN2: The Great Rewrite – Why the current pandemic is not as unprecedent…

In the next year, you are going to hear a lot of people talk about a 'Great' or 'Big' Reset. So much so, that it is the subject of Davos this year. Most of these theories will somehow engage in the same old mythology that the world is moving a step ahead and you, your company and your leadership need to catch up.  COVID will be used as exemplary fuel for this argument. You will be told that COVID is unique, unprecedented and the world will never be the same again.

This, for the most part, is incorrect. What we are experiencing now is a very predictable and repeatable pattern that our world has been engaged in for close to the last 3 centuries. Prior to 1749, the world pretty much looked the same. However, after Industrialization, we began a process that sees us resetting the operating system of our planet on a very regular basis.  COVID is merely an example of one such reset. And, while it has many elements that are unique, in fact, the pattern is likely very predictable.

So, how does this affect the world of accounting and finance? Businesses of all sizes are now reacting to both the positive and negative due to COVID.

Leonard Brody is one of the world’s leading experts on these historical resets and has been researching this topic for almost a decade. Leonard Brody will walk us through this historical cycle and demonstrate how this will affect the role of accountants going forward, practice management and how accountants become critical strategic partners to their clients.

Spoiler alert: It all works out in the end

KN3: Leading with emotional integrity – Why 'negative' emotions are cri…

During challenging times, it’s essential that we lead with emotional honesty and integrity. To show up to our colleagues effectively, we must first be able to understand our emotions for what they are: information, rather than facts or directives.

Harvard Medical School’s Dr Susan David challenges the prevailing attitude that we should “fix” our difficult emotions through positive thinking. Instead of ignoring our troubling thoughts or emotions, we can gain critical insights from them in order to adapt, take values-based actions, and ignite change in our lives.

She draws on more than 20 years of research with her concept of emotional agility, which teaches individuals how to thrive in an uncertain world.

Seth will talk about the importance of being creative during challenging times. Like Icarus’s story – flying high can be dangerous but maybe flying low aka staying safe can be deceptively, even more dangerous. How then, can we be ‘unpredictable’, fly higher to keep up with the ever-moving safety zones; how can we use creativity to innovate and to rise to the challenge.

KN10: Data and Accounting – Rethinking value creation and the finance f…

We live in a world that shows more upheavals than ever before. More than ever, it is harder to answer questions such as: What is value? How do we create value? How should we protect value once created? In addition to the external distortions, the Wirecard scandal shows that one has to mistrust management and the finance team.

COVID-19 has massively accelerated the change to digital business models, adding another layer of complexities to existing challenges. What looked like an evolution in the last few years will become a revolution overnight. As threatening as all of this sounds, it is also the opportunity for financial management to position itself as the safe haven in a company, supporting value creation and protecting value, once created. In this talk, Matthias will explore how finance and accounting teams can leverage data in rethinking value creation.

KN12: How to identify your organisation's innovation trajectory – a pra…

Being successful at innovation requires more than just having creative people and great ideas – it requires being strategic about innovation. A great innovation strategy has a portfolio of projects that target the firm's objectives while also striking a balance across different levels of risk and payoff horizons. A great innovation strategy helps to jumpstart the firm to where you want to be ten years from now,and takes into account the moves being made by your competitors, customers, suppliers and more.

In this talk, world-renowned innovation expert, Melissa Schilling, first helps managers think through how their different innovation projects collectively achieve a portfolio, and helps them identify where their portfolio may be imbalanced in terms of risk, payoff horizon, strategic objectives, and resources.

She then leads participants through a fun and illuminating exercise where they identify where the next big breakthroughs in their industry are likely to be (or should be), and how they can prioritize their innovation opportunities. There are usually some wonderful “Aha!” moments in this exercise as people discover areas where the firm should re-focus its efforts.

KN13: Five things that will define the post-pandemic world economy

Even before the 2020 global pandemic hit the world in earnest, the global economy was in a precarious place. Many of the largest developed and developing countries were already experiencing low, slow and even no growth. In this sense, COVID is catalytic and has accelerated the threats to the global economy.

Moreover, a number of headwinds are making a bad situation, worse. Technology and the risk of a jobless underclass; weakening demographics – in terms of the quantity of the population and the quality of the workforce; worsening income inequality; scarcity of natural resources and climate change concerns; unsustainable debts and declining productivity.

Dr. Dambisa Moyo outlines five things that will define the post-pandemic world economy.
