Alex Ooi FCPA (Aust.)
Who is Alex Ooi? He’s the immediate past president of CPA Australia, Malaysia division, who forged inroads with Yayasan Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera (Peneraju), a unit under the Prime Minister’s office in the form of a partnership to provide the opportunity for the Bumiputera workforce to be professionally qualified. He also oversaw CPA Australia’s signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with local regulator, the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) allowing senior MIA members a special pathway to obtaining the CPA designation.
Alex has always been a champion of auditing and professional services, with his career beginning in Deloitte Malaysia. After an 18-year stint, during which time he became Partner, he moved to BDO Malaysia.
A CPA Australia member since 1993, Alex feels that the distance learning program provided by CPA Australia has allowed him to have a smooth career progression. “There were no risks in me concentrating too much on my work and neglecting my studies or vice versa. I was promoted to Partner after 10 years and I feel that the flexibility of the CPA Program helped a lot with that,” he says.
“I would definitely encourage students, young working adults, and my employees to take up the program. The distinguishing factor that sets CPA Australia apart from the others is that we have a very holistic approach to accounting and it provides a balance of business and financial learning as well. That will definitely help you a lot when you enter the corporate world, as you’ve already been exposed to all these elements.”
Apart from being a very active CPA Australia member, Alex is also the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) District Coordinator. His experience in the corporate sector allows him to contribute to many successful projects that enrich the community.
