CPA Australia collaborates with Indonesian Government Ahead of National MSMEs Day to Strengthen Sector competitiveness
Ahead of Indonesia’s National MSMEs Day on 12 August, CPA Australia joined forces with Indonesia’s Ministry of Finance and the Banyuwangi Regency Government to improve financial literacy among micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
A targeted financial literacy workshop was recently held from 6-7 August 2025 for 30 selected MSMEs in Banyuwangi, aiming to equip business owners with practical financial knowledge and tools to enhance their ability to prepare financial reports.
The MSMEs were selected based on their maturity in financial literacy, enabling the workshop to focus on practical applications and more advanced financial practices.
Supporting CPA Australia, the Directorate of Financial System Stability and Policy Synchronisation in the Financial Sector within the Ministry of Finance highlighted available financing resources for MSMEs, while the Banyuwangi Regency Government facilitated the delivery of the workshop.
This initiative builds on the launch of CPA Australia’s toolkit Panduan Pengelolaan UMKM: Mewujudkan UMKM yang Berkembang dan Berdaya Saing, introduced late last year to support Indonesia’s national priority of increasing practical financial knowledge among MSMEs.
“We are privileged to play a pivotal role in supporting the Indonesian government’s efforts to enhance MSMEs competitiveness as part of its financial inclusion drive,” said Priya Terumalay FCPA, Regional Head for CPA Australia in Southeast Asia.
“This aligns with our commitment to strengthen economic resilience and improving financial capability across ASEAN.
“CPA Australia members have the deep expertise required to help MSMEs build stronger financial capabilities. Our collaboration with local governments and other organisations is made possible through the dedication of members such as Euneke Winarjo CPA, who led the workshop in Banyuwangi.”
The decision to conduct the workshop in Banyuwangi aligns with the Ministry of Finance’s pilot project to enhance the financial literacy of MSMEs in this location.
“I am very grateful for the learning opportunity and valuable insights from this workshop,” said Siti Rofiah, owner of an MSME in Banyuwangi, reflecting the positive impact of the program at the grassroot level.
This is the first time CPA Australia has delivered a workshop of this nature for MSMEs in Indonesia, marking a significant step in its broader engagement to support financial literacy nationwide through its partnership with Ministry of Finance.
With a presence of more than 70 years in ASEAN that began in Singapore, CPA Australia has a strong regional presence. Since opening its Jakarta office in 2011, the organisation has played a pivotal role in supporting the professional development of accountiong and finance personnel across both government and private sectors in Indonesia.
According to CPA Australia’s annual Asia-Pacific Small Business Survey, Indonesian small business growth prospects are at a five-year high with 83 per cent reporting growth in 2024.
“Our survey results reveal that Indonesia’s small business sector is being driven by dynamic and youthful entrepreneurs who are embracing technology to drive their businesses. With the right guidance and continued support from the Indonesian government, they have strong potential to further enhance their performance and competitiveness,” Priya said.
"We welcome the support provided by CPA Australia in enhancing financial literacy among MSMEs in Indonesia,” said Risyaf Fahreza, Head of Subdirectorate for Program and Knowledge Management, Directorate of Financial System Stability and Policy Synchronization in the Financial Sector, Ministry of Finance.
“This workshop aligns with the government’s priorities to strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of the MSME sector by improving access to finance and financial understanding. Collaborations like this represents a meaningful synergy between the government and international partners in supporting an inclusive and sustainable economic transformation."
In conveying his appreciation, Nanin Oktaviantie, Head of the Cooperatives, Micro Enterprises, and Trade Office of Banyuwangi Regency said, “We truly appreciate CPA Australia’s support and initiative in advancing financial literacy among MSMEs in Banyuwangi.
“This collaboration with the Ministry of Finance not only empowers our local entrepreneurs with essential financial knowledge to grow their businesses, but also contributes to the broader national agenda of strengthening MSMEs as the backbone of Indonesia’s economy.
“With better financial understanding, our MSMEs will be more resilient, competitive, and be ready to grow both locally and beyond.”
