Overview
A hands-on case study takes you from raw data through to creating reports and an analytical dashboard. Comprehensive instructions to complete the activities are included in course notes, as are pre-built solutions for key case study stages. As well as the technical how to, the course covers data model design for business intelligence and key principles for good visualisation in reports and dashboards.
Rather than using worksheets and formulae in cells that are the foundation of traditional Excel, the course uses Power Query, Power Pivot and DAX which are the same enterprise level tools (in Excel) as used in Power BI desktop. You will learn to easily adapt what you practiced in Excel to working in Power BI.
Key topics covered
- Connecting, extracting, transforming and loading data from files, folders, databases and more using Power Query
- Data models for Business Intelligence (Star and Snowflake Schema) with Fact and Dimension tables including budget comparatives at different granularity
- Introduction to DAX coding potential for creating columns, measures and time intelligence (plus alternative approaches to avoid writing code)
- Interactive Dashboards and Power Pivot tables plus flexible hybrid reporting (not being limited to a Pivot table format)
- Applying the above to Power BI desktop (using the significant overlap of techniques) and why you might choose Excel/ Power BI/ both for your business scenarios
