WA Member Snapshot - 5 Feb 24
Thanks for sitting down with us today, Abhilash. So first question, what attracted you to healthcare?
I was drawn to this sector primarily because of the strong alignment of values. The opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the community attracted me to my role at Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (Derbarl). Working in the health sector allows me to contribute my financial expertise to support essential healthcare services, especially within the context of an Aboriginal community-controlled health organisation.
Is there anything you feel about the Aboriginal community-controlled health organisation that is important to know, or a misconception perhaps?
It's crucial to recognise that Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations operate with a unique focus on culturally responsive and community-led healthcare. A common misconception is that these organisations solely provide clinical services, but in reality, they embrace a holistic approach that considers the cultural and social determinants of health, ensuring a more comprehensive and effective healthcare delivery.
Abhilash how has the CPA brand assisted your current or previous roles?
Being a CPA has significantly enhanced my professional credibility in financial leadership roles. The CPA brand is synonymous with high ethical standards, financial expertise, and commitment to excellence. It has facilitated effective communication with stakeholders, instilling confidence in the financial management of Derbarl.
What would you say the skills you really draw on to deliver and succeed in your role?
In my current role, working with multi-disciplinary team, strategic financial planning, and a deep understanding of both financial and operational aspects of Derbarl are crucial. Additionally, the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including the funding bodies and Executive management team is essential for success. Having a reliable and efficient finance team is crucial for the smooth operation of any organisation, and it reflects positively on the overall financial health and stability. As the CFO, leading and supporting the finance team is pivotal in ensuring that all financial processes are not only completed on time, but also done accurately and in compliance with relevant regulations.
And what about the current challenges in the sector generally?
The health sector, especially Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, faces challenges related to funding constraints, ensuring equitable access to healthcare, and addressing the unique health needs of indigenous communities. Navigating these challenges requires innovative financial strategies and a commitment to community well-being.
Further to that, what’s the outlook for the sector?
The future outlook for Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations is promising, with an increased recognition of the importance of culturally responsive healthcare. Collaborative efforts to address health disparities and secure sustainable funding sources will play a pivotal role in shaping the sector's future.
Last question - how is the accounting profession changing in your view, and what does the future hold for our profession?
The accounting profession is evolving with increased emphasis on technology, data analytics, and strategic financial management. As finance professionals, we need to stay abreast of technological advancements, strengthen our analytical capabilities, and embrace a more strategic role in guiding organisations through complex financial landscapes. The future holds opportunities for accountants to become strategic business partners, influencing organisational decision-making beyond traditional financial reporting.
