Technology forces shaping the finance sector: CPA Australia tackles the big questions
As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes various industries, its true impact on finance and accounting is yet to be determined, with the possibilities, risks, challenges and opportunities still being debated and discovered.
CPA Congress 2025 brings together global experts and thought leaders to explore the impact of technology trends, including how AI is already transforming – and could further transform – ways of working, as well as how business professionals can seize the opportunities it brings.
This year’s in-person CPA Congress in Kuala Lumpur will be held at the Mandarin Oriental on November 6. It is aimed at attracting participation from Asia, especially Southeast Asia finance, accounting and business professionals.
CPA Australia’s Regional Head for Southeast Asia, Priya Terumalay, said accountants are at the forefront of AI implementation within their organisations, and are on the front-line of debate and scrutiny over when and how it is utilised.
“The theme of this year’s Congress – Prepare for Impact – couldn’t be more timely,” she said. “The accounting profession stands at the foot of a mountain of expectations and opportunities, with a willingness to help lead the way.
“This year’s Congress has an impressive array of impressive topics, including leading global AI and technology experts to help participants chart their own course.
“Expect real-world insights, candid discussions and practical learnings that make sense. For us at CPA Australia, it’s about cutting through the noise and exploring what really matters to our members.”
Key speakers at Congress 2025 will include:
- Innovation and digital strategist Scott Bales on the crucial distinction between genuine technological progress and overhyped trends that frequently result in misaligned investments and strategic missteps. He will challenge prevailing assumptions around popular technologies such as AI, blockchain, smart cities and open APIs, and offer a grounded perspective on what’s truly working in practice.
- Human connection specialist Simone Heng on how AI companions are changing how we connect at home and at work, and how AI and other new technologies enhance human bonds and are reshaping relationships
- Global Strategy Advisor Dr Parag Khanna on what geopolitical shifts mean for finance and business where fresh patterns are emerging that could form the foundation of a new global order, including opportunities for ASEAN businesses to leverage their local knowledge and openness to partner in all directions.
- Cybersecurity expert Alastair MacGibbon on cyber risk and how finance and business leaders navigate the toxic threat landscape. He will discuss balancing global and regional responsibilities, addressing emerging risks in critical technologies, and understanding the unique role ASEAN businesses play in safeguarding data and trust across borders
- Dr Rumman Chowdhury, founder of Humane Intelligence, data scientist and former AI lead at Accenture, will examine the complexities of sovereign AI models where national priorities, legal frameworks and ethical values must align. She will also highlight key initiatives from Malaysia, India and Singapore, and will discuss regulatory fragmentation, resource risks and balancing innovation with inclusivity. Her speech is accessible via the Virtual Congress.
