CPA members gain new pathway under NZ skilled migration settings

• Eligible CPA Australia members can now claim six points under New Zealand’s Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa pathway from 24 August 2026.
• The change follows sustained advocacy by CPA Australia for its members’ designations to be recognised.
• CPA Australia encourages members considering migration or already working in New Zealand to check their eligibility with Immigration New Zealand.

CPA Australia has welcomed changes to New Zealand’s Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa, which now recognise eligible CPA Australia members under the occupational registration pathway from 24 August 2026.

Under the updated settings, accountants who can undertake the work of a Qualified Statutory Accountant in New Zealand and who are members of CPA Australia can claim six points under the SMC pathway. Six points is the threshold required to apply under the points-based pathway, alongside a skilled job or job offer.

CPA Australia Regional Head Rick Jones said the change was a positive outcome for CPA members and reflected the strength of the CPA designation.

“This is welcome recognition of the capability, professional standing and global mobility of CPA Australia members,” Mr Jones said.

“We advocated for this change because our members already hold a qualification that meets New Zealand’s standard for financial and accounting professionals. Our members bring high-quality professional skills, international experience and trusted expertise to the markets in which they work.

“For an accountant considering a move to New Zealand, or already working here on a temporary visa, this changes the calculation. We encourage members to review the requirements carefully and seek advice on their individual circumstances.

“Skilled migration complements New Zealand’s domestic workforce by bringing in professionals with global perspectives and practical business insight. This diversity of experience strengthens the profession and supports the local businesses and communities these accountants advise.”
