Advancing to CPA status

To advance to CPA status you need to:

  1. successfully complete the CPA Program 
  2. complete the practical experience / Mentor Program requirements

Required documentation for advancement will vary depending on when you enrolled in the CPA Program. To view the documentation required, select the section that describes your situation:

Any documentation not complying with the required details and format will be returned to you and may delay your advancement.

Advancement timeframes

If you joined CPA Australia prior to 1 January 2004:

  • on completion of the CPA Program successful candidates are allowed five years in which to advance to CPA status

If you joined CPA Australia after 1 January 2004:

  • you must advance to CPA status within eight years of admission as an Associate member

If you joined CPA Australia after 30 June 2007:

  • you must advance to CPA status within six years of admission as an Associate member

Extension of time to advance to CPA status

If you are unable to complete the practical experience requirements (the Mentor Program) within the advancement timeframe due to special circumstances, you may apply for an extension of time to advance to CPA status.

If approved, you will be granted a period of time in which to complete the practical experience requirements and advance to CPA status.

Fees

No fees apply to advance to CPA status. An ASA advancing to CPA status will commence paying full membership fees in the year following advancement.

CPA certificate

Upon advancing to CPA status, you will receive a confirmation letter in the mail. This letter will also explain your choices with regards to receiving your CPA certificate: either at a presentation ceremony, collected from a CPA Australia office or posted to you by mail.
