The Changing Face of the Accounting Profession in Australia
Report prepared for CPA Australia by Dr Bob Birrell from the Centre for Population and Urban Research at Monash University.
This report explores the growth of the accounting profession over the past decade and the extent to which this increased reliance on migrant accountants is meeting employer requirements.
The report also considers whether the recent scale of migration of accountants is likely to continue. An answer to this question requires a review of recent trends in enrolment levels of overseas students in Australian university accounting courses as well as an analysis of possible changes to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural AffairÂ’s (DIMA) selection criteria.
DIMA has recently published an Evaluation of the General Skilled Migration Categories which recommends a number of such changes. The Government has indicated that it will implement some of these recommendations from July 1 2007.
