Advocacy update: June 2008

2020 Summit
CPA Australia made a submission to the two-day summit that was held in Canberra on 19 and 20 April and that was tasked with developing a vision for Australia in 2020.

The submission was developed in consultation with members and member committees, and commented on four of 10 topics on the summit's agenda. Four key shared priorities emerging from the summit were: responding to climate change; creating a seamless economy through a national approach; developing people and strengthening civil society.

CPA Australia has long been an advocate on many of the issues emerging from the summit and will continue to work with government to deliver the summit vision.

Innovation review

CPA Australia made a series of recommendations to the federal government-appointed panel on the review of the national innovation system. Our submission was focused on how innovation can be stimulated to ensure Australia has a robust and internationally competitive economy for future generations.

Corporate governance
CPA Australia has responded to the background paper released by the corporations and financial services division of Treasury regarding provision and disclosure of the non-recourse loan component of executive remuneration. CPA Australia expressed support for greater shareholder oversight of non-recourse loan schemes.

Advocacy
CPA Australia has completed a range of submissions over a cross-section of issues, including providing comments on the current review of Australia's Tax Treaty Negotiation Policy and the Consultation Paper 96 issued by ASIC that relates to the proposed insurance arrangements for registered liquidators.

Tax inspector-general
The federal assistant treasurer Chris Bowen has announced that the government will retain the office of the inspector-general of taxation (IGOT) as a separate independent statutory office. This decision is welcomed by CPA Australia, as we have previously called on the government to retain the IGOT as an independent reviewer of systemic tax administration problems.

Opposition
CPA Australia representatives met with Michael Keenan, shadow assistant treasurer and shadow minister for superannuation and corporate governance. Representatives also met with Steven Ciobo, opposition spokesman for small business, services economy and tourism. Issues discussed included the importance of supporting innovation in the services economy and reducing regulation.
