China a green leader?
China is taking major steps to reduce the greenhouse pollution emanating from its massive industrial areas, says an independent climate change advocacy group.
According to a paper published by Australia's Climate Institute, policies already introduced in China are projected to prevent at least 200 million tonnes of new pollution by 2010. The country is also emerging as one of the world's clean energy super powers. Renewable energy investment in China in 2006 was around A$7.7bn - approximately 9 per cent of the A$85.6bn dollars invested in renewable energy globally.
The government says it is aiming to raise the ratio of renewable energy usage in its total energy consumption to 15 per cent by 2020.
