Public sector risk management
blue horizontal line

The public sector has pioneered some of the most dynamic and significant changes within any industry sector, transforming itself from a bureaucracy to a focused, efficient enterprise. In doing so, it has successfully changed outdated public perceptions. The adoption of risk management strategies has contributed to the public sector's ability to redevelop itself.

CPA Australia's Public Sector Centre of Excellence recognises the importance of risk management to the public sector and has published a series of publications to broaden the knowledge of the sector's use of risk management strategies and tools.

Below is a brief description of the publications:

1. Public Sector Risk Management - A State of Play
This report assess the importance the public sector in Australia gives to risk management, the approach it takes to implementing risk management and its performance in this area. The report also outlines the risk management policies and practices in the sector, examines their impact and explores opportunities for improvement.

2. Enterprise-Wide Risk Management - Better Practice Guide for the Public Sector
Designed to provide your organisation with improved principles and approaches, allowing you to determine which strategies best suit your circumstances and management systems. The guide also looks at how the integration of risk management across the organisation at various levels can improve overall performance.

3. Case Studies in Public Sector Risk Management
Contains eight case studies of Australian public sector agencies that have implemented risk management frameworks. These studies provide a cross-section of the three levels of government and various jurisdictions, and examine the different strategies pursued by each agency. The studies focus on the risk management process and its success, the implications for other areas of management and the future risk management directions.

4. Survey Results - Risk Management in the Public Sector
A collation of survey results highlights the impact of risk management policies and practices in the public sector and explores opportunities for improvement. The challenge for the future is to develop mature methodologies such as performance indicators, more sophisticated monitoring skills and communicate and link risks directly to corporate objectives.

Ensure you have the tools to assist you in the development of effective risk management across all levels and sectors of the public sector.
