Q. Can I become a member of CPA Australia if I have graduated from local / non-Australian universities?
A. Yes, you can. If you have completed a non-accredited degree you will need to get a qualifications assessment.

Depending on your assessment result, you may need to complete additional studies to meet our core knowledge requirements. This can be done by completing undergraduate or postgraduate studies that have been accredited by CPA Australia.

Please contact the Malaysia division for further details on the conversion courses.

Q. How can I apply for overseas assessment?
A. CPA Australia's qualifications assessment unit assesses qualifications on a fee-for-service basis for overseas-qualified accountants seeking membership of CPA Australia.

We aim to complete your assessment within six to eight weeks. You will be advised of your individual admission requirement in the assessment letter which will be sent directly to you from the qualifications assessment unit.

Q. How is the CPA Australia designation recognised in Malaysia?
A. The Accountants Act 1967 requires that to practice or work as an 'accountant' or position of like description, one must be a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA). As a scheduled body of the MIA, membership of CPA Australia is a much sought after route:

  • for direct entry into the MIA without any further examinations or work experience
  • to an internationally recognised accountancy qualification.

The three categories of membership of the MIA are:

  • Chartered accountant or CA(M), irrespective of the designation Public accountant (PA) or Registered accountant (RA) under the old Act
  • Licensed accountant
  • Associate members

The Malaysian branch council requests that CPA Australia members in Malaysia use the designation 'CPA (Aust)' to differentiate themselves from the CPA of other accountancy bodies. For more details visit the MIA website
  • Q. What are the closing dates for admission?
    A. No closing date for admission but if you would like to enrol for CPA Program, please submit your form before the closing date for CPA Program enrolment.
    Q. How do I become a student member of CPA Australia?
    A. All students taking courses offered by recognised local universities in Malaysia or Australian institutions are welcome to join CPA Passport. Visit the CPA Careers website for more information.
