Requirements for CPAs advancing to Fellow status

All applicants applying to advance to FCPA status must provide:

Work experience requirements

  1. Minimum fifteen years of full-time work experience in accounting and/or finance and/or business.
  2. Minimum five years experience in a responsible executive* position or five years experience gained in full-time practice as a public accountant either alone or in partnership.

*Executive position: person working at a strategic level and/or having major input to strategic decisions in their organisation. By-Law 103.1 requires that this be ‘relating to’ accounting and/or finance and/or business.

Documentary evidence requirements

Members are required to provide evidence in the form of a detailed:

  1. Curriculum vitae: should outline company name, period of employment for each role, job titles and duties performed.
  2. Character references and/or workplace testimonials:

    a) Members not in public practice: Members are required to provide evidence in the form of certified copies of character references and/or work testimonials from a current and/or former employer.

    b) Members in public practice: Members are required to provide evidence in the form of certified copies of character references and/or work testimonials from the principal/partner and/or clients of the firm.

    Character references and/or work testimonials should reflect the nature of the relationship with the applicant, position title, duration of role(s) and a brief summary of duties performed within their role(s).
  3. Organisational chart - an organisational chart must illustrate your position within the company’s management structure.
  4. In addition, members should provide any information which may assist in determining the size and standing of their company/organisation and their position in the organisational structure. These may include:
    • details of accounting staff responsible to the member 
    • person or body to whom the member is directly responsible
    • published company annual reports or such other relevant company documents which include information on annual turnover and number of employees
  5. CPA Australia welcomes additional testimonials from fellow CPA Australia Members.
