Message from the president: August 2008

This month I met some of our local Wollongong business people and journalists at the president's luncheon. Wollongong is the state's third largest city and it was great to be able to share ideas about the accounting profession in the region as well as the great work the Illawarra branch is doing. We were also able to celebrate Anne Abraham's success in receiving the Pearson Education Accounting / Finance Lecturer of the Year Award for 2008.

I chaired the recent SME Update at which Adrian McFedries from DC Strategy spoke about serious growth in tough times. He explained the difference between spending time on the business rather than in the business, which I thought was very insightful. Next month in Small Business September, there are several events aimed at small business practitioners. One event in particular is our SME Day on Thursday 25 September, which I encourage everyone to attend.

There has also been a lot of activity around corporate social responsibility this month. Our CPA Centre was turned into a filming studio to record our Changing gears video. Several of our New South Wales members were interviewed on their career transitions, so keep your eye on the website to see the final product, which will be released soon.

Finally, the CPA Congress brochures have been produced. We're using social media for the first time. This means that you'll be able to meet and network with people online and even attend sessions online. I encourage you to have a look on our website and register for CPA Congress, so that you don't miss out on the early bird rates which are available until Friday 12 September. I look forward to seeing you there.
