CPA Program structure for candidates who started the CPA Program before 2004

Candidates who enrolled in the CPA Program between semester 1, 2001 and semester 2, 2003 must complete five segments within five years of their commencement date.

Candidates who are unable to complete the CPA Program within five years may be eligible to apply for an extension of time

Candidates must complete the compulsory segments Reporting and Professional Practice (RPP) and Corporate Governance and Accountability (CGA), and three electives chosen from available segments, including Business Strategy and Leadership (replaced by Global Strategy and Leadership from Semester 2 2010). Reporting and Professional Practice must be a part of every candidate's first enrolment and each subsequent enrolment until it has been completed successfully. It must be completed successfully before enrolling in CGA. Transition arrangements are in place for candidates who have not completed RPP and/or CGA prior to 2011.

Elective segments can be completed in any order. The elective segments are:

*Candidates who have not completed studies in auditing and / or taxation at undergraduate level must complete these subjects as part of the CPA Program in order to advance to CPA status (see below).

Local taxation courses will become available over time for candidates in major markets outside Australia as an alternative to studying Australian taxation. This will benefit those candidates who wish to work in other jurisdictions and who may not require a detailed knowledge of Australian taxation law.

For Singapore Taxation, candidates must attend face-to-face workshops throughout the semester and the exam in Singapore.

** Contemporary Business Issues is offered in a blended learning format which includes two modules delivered in an online format only. This delivery mode provides greater flexibility for candidates to access the material anytime, anywhere. The online material is not included in the content of the printed study guide and is examinable. System requirements also apply. Please see the segment outline for more information.

New CPA Program segments in 2004

Two new segments were introduced to the CPA Program in 2004. Candidates who commenced the CPA Program before 2004 are eligible to enrol in these segments although some conditions apply:

  • Business Strategy and Leadership / Global Strategy and Leadership, which is compulsory for candidates commencing the CPA Program from 2004 onwards, will be offered as an elective to candidates enrolled prior to 2004.  
  • Knowledge Management is being offered to existing candidates as an elective. However, candidates who have completed Business Information Management cannot enrol in Knowledge Management. Note that Knowledge Management is not offered after Semester 2 2009.

A major rewrite of the Treasury segment occurred during 2004. A new segment titled Financial Risk Management has replaced Treasury from semester 1, 2005. Candidates who have successfully completed Treasury cannot enrol in Financial Risk Management.
