CPA Australia's commitment to advancing accounting education in Vietnam was prominent during a visit to the country by Paul Wappett, executive general manager, international development, in April.
During the visit, CPA Australia and the National Economics University (NEU) entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the view to advance common interests and positively contribute to the development of the accounting profession in Vietnam.
The MOU aims to promote CPA Australia and the CPA designation at NEU campuses, promote CPA Australia’s entry pathways to NEU students studying finance, business and accounting degrees and disseminate information to students about the accounting profession and the opportunities available to accounting professionals.
As part of the MOU signing, Mr Wappett spoke to 200 NEU students about careers in accounting and presented CPA Australia scholarships to leading students and lecturers. Mr Wappett also offered some tips to the aspiring accountants on how to best develop their skills when starting out in their careers.
‘The most important thing,’ he told the students, ‘is to be open to feedback from others, by being honest with yourself about the areas you need to develop.
‘Show initiative, do more than the bare minimum and be prepared to take some risks. But always concentrate on being as competent and capable as you can be in your current role’, said Paul.
Paul also had an opportunity to speak to around 500 students at the Academy of Finance (AOF) accounting and auditing festival of which CPA Australia were major sponsors. The festival aims to strengthen the level of interest in accounting research, develop the university’s relationship with the profession, and develop the knowledge and skills of AOF students.
