Stronger assessment criteria for migrants seeking a career in accounting in Australia

Date issued: 27 April 2010

Australia's three professional accounting bodies – CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and the National Institute of Accountants – have further increased the English language assessment criteria for people wishing to migrate to Australia to pursue a career in accounting.

The three bodies are gazetted by the Federal Government to assess qualifications for migration purposes for people wishing to apply for permanent residence.

Applicants wishing to apply for permanent residency as accountants will now have their English language proficiency assessed alongside their qualifications. A successful assessment for migration purposes will require an International English Language Testing Score (IELTS) of 7.0.

The new requirements will come into effect on 1 July 2010.
